In early October 2003, the Air Force selected Actus Lend Lease as the preferred developer to develop, design, construct, renovate and maintain homes at Hickam Air Force Base , Hawaii, arguably the Air Force's most visible installation in the Pacific theater. Hickam AFB is the home of the 15th Airlift Wing, the Pacific Air Forces Command and many other tenant units.
In February 2005, the Air Force and Actus closed their lease agreement for 1,356 homes and associated community assets, resulting in the formation of a separate project company, Hickam Community Housing LLC (HCH), to carryout the operational responsibilities of the 50-year project. This agreement has been referred to as Hickam Phase I.
On Aug. 1, 2007, the Air Force and Actus Lend Lease closed their lease agreement for the remaining homes at Hickam as well as the family homes on Bellows Air Force Station, bringing the total end-state homes to be managed by HCH for the next 50 years to 2,474. This agreement has been referred to as Hickam Phase II. One of the more exciting components of combined project is the single-largest contiguous historical homes community renovation project in the nation, encompassing hundreds of Hickam's historically profound structures.
The new and renovated homes of HCH represent the finest of Air Force community living. New homes are 20 percent to 40 percent larger than many of the existing homes Hickam families have been living in for decades. HCH will boast expanses of open space punctuated by community and recreational facilities, including a new swimming pool and other improvements for its Air Force families.
The family housing communities at Hickam will feature state-of-the-art design and technology, incorporating the most modern and efficient construction techniques and processes. In addition to employing innovative design and construction techniques, the principles of environmental sustainability also form a key aspect of our approach to the living at HCH. For example, HCH recycles more than 90 percent of the materials resulting from the demolition of existing structures. These materials are recycled on site and put to immediate use in other construction activities. Another illustration of the company's dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in the preservation of trees, as those that remain in the path of key construction are either be moved or replaced.
