Nearly 70 years ago, the Army Air Corps entrusted the layout and design of Hickam Field, one of its newest installations, to Captain Howard B. Nurse. This visionary young Captain set out to create a neighborhood using efficient planning. techniques of the time. Today, significant steps are being taken to preserve Captain Nurse’s now-historic vision.
The homes he designed reflect the architectural style popular in Hawaii in the 1930s. Captain Nurse recognized that the Hawaiian bungalow-style worked well with the local climate and suited an island lifestyle. HCH and the Air Force are committed to preserving these historic homes for the continued use by Airmen and their families.
The process of preservation begins with a select group of historic homes, one of each plan type. These 24 homes serve as the “museum” homes for each plan type and are restored as close to their original state as possible, while including modern conveniences such as central A/C and modern Energy Star rated appliances. The scope and quality of work are carefully reviewed by a team of professionals from Actus Lend Lease, the Air Force, the State Historic Preservation Division, and HCH to ensure homes meet the required historic standards. Upon acceptance of a restored select home, the rehabilitation work (which may include a complete redesign of the interior floor plan, a rear addition, or partial renovation of the interior) on the remaining units of the same plan type can commence. By the end of 2013, all homes in Officer Field will have been preserved.
While preserving the legacy of this distinct historic district, HCH is excited to have the opportunity to add modern amenities for today’s Air Force Families. HCH is proud to be part of the Air Force’s effort to preserve part of Hickam Air Force Base’s rich history.
