In 2007, the Air Force and Hickam Community Housing LLC (HCH) entered into the second phase privatization agreement that includes the replacement and renovation of 488 residential units in Onizuka Village. The demolition of 142 enlisted homes signified the start of Phase II-1 new construction and by June 2009, HCH will receive 104 new FGO homes from developer Actus Lend Lease.
New construction will take place in three phases, with the final phase expected to be completed in summer 2011. Minor renovations will be completed on Challenger Loop homes as they become available, and they will be re-designated as enlisted housing. Onizuka Village also will be home to the new HCH housing office and new maintenance compound.
The completion of homes in Onizuka is part of the long-term plan to provide new homes to military families. As completion of more new enlisted homes become available, Onizuka Village will transform into its original designation of an Officer housing area.
Onizuka Village was named in tribute to Col Ellison Onizuka, a Hawaii-born astronaut who was part of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. To honor Col Onizuka’s service to our nation and his ties to Hawaii, all streets in Onizuka Village will reflect an Earth and outer space theme, translated into the Hawaiian language.
HCH is proud to honor the memory of Col Onizuka, a true American hero, and we hope you will share in our pride when you become a resident of Onizuka Village.
